It is said that there are many avatars of Lord Shiva.Among such avatars, Bhairab is the one.
Bagbhairab is the only one single avatar of bhairab which is in the form of tiger.
There are various stories found for its history. Among such story one is found to be more reliable
At ancient time, a group of girls were taking their goats for feeding. To kill the time, they started to make the idol of tiger from clay .When the idol was completed only the part of tongue was left. They decided to, completing the idol by keeping tongue of leaf.
For this they need to find suitable piece of leaf so they ordered the idol of tiger to take care of their goats and went in forest for search of idol's tongue.
When they came back none of the goats were there. When they asked the tiger's idol, it opened its mouth full of blood stains .The girls in angerness then cursed the tiger that always it's mouth will be opened and will be tongueless.
When the girls told all this incident to their parents, nobody believed them. From that they onwards, the roaming of tiger is heard over all kirtipur area, and their domestic animals found to be disappeared.
Then the Kirtipurians went to The Great Acharya, who told them that , the Lord Bhairab itself came into that idol of tiger and due to the curse given by the girls, it was roaming around so the tiger need to be worshipped and jatra ( act of taking the idol over whole Kirtipur) should be done. From such day onwards Bagbhairab temple was formed .
Since ,the idol is made up of clay, it used to get destroyed easily due to mice and insects and other disasters . Therefore, the idol is restructured and put it to the place by the Bajracharya Pujari. For the restructure of idol , the clay should be bought from seven different points of tantrick temple located at Balaju of Kathmandu.
The weapons used by Bir Gorkhalis during the conqueror of Kirtipur is hanged in this temple. Hence , Bagbhairab is known to be the protector of Kirtipur City.
