In Nepal, Bhatbhateni supermarket is popular all over the country. Despite it being a popular supermarket, you might not know the story behind it. The supermarket is named after the famous temple ' Bhatbhateni' located in Naxal, Kathmandu. The first supermarket of Bhatbhateni was established here.Later the branches were developed all over the country.
Moving into our today's main theme, Bhatbhateni Devi is considered to be the goddess of the temple. She is also know as 'Mamata Ajimaa'. She is also considered as the flying goddess and it is said that her statue should not touch the ground and always need to be fly in air. Therefore, the statue of Bhatbhateni Devi along with the statue of her husband and son is hanged inside the temple.
There are various stories behind the flying goddess. As per one of the tale , a long time ago there lived a Brahmin couple named, 'Sudip 'and 'sudevi'. They were the devotees of'Lord Narayan'. Even after the long time of their marriage they were unable to have children. Seeing their devotion and purity, Lord Narayan asked them for blessing whatever they want .The couple asked for a child . Since , the couple were aged, Lord Narayan blessed them that they will be couple again in their next birth or life and will be blessed with a beautiful child.
As the time passes by the couple died. They were born in the same place again and got married and gave birth to the cute baby boy. Despite being poor ,they were loved and respected by all due to their drudgery and good behaviour.
One day a old Brahman named "Suddhadev "went to their house and asked them to keep his stick safely. He told them that he will return to get the stick back after 12 years . As the time passed by the stick was destroyed by flies and insects .The couple thought that the Brahman won't come back to get the stick back so they decided to break it. When they tried to broke it, the gems and valuable stones appeard before them.
They considered it God's gift to improve their livelihood. Therefore, they sold the gems and used the money to improve their living standards. After a period , the Brahman,"Suddhadev" came back to get his stick. When the couple told about the reality, he became furious as he thought they were lying. At the meantime, an eagle was flying above. The Brahman cursed the couple that their child will be taken away by that flying eagle. As a result , that eagle attacked the child and flown away.To protect and get back the child, the couple hoped up towards the child. They were successfull to protect the child from eagle . During such moment a miracle happened .The child was metamorphosised into the form of 'Shree Garud Vishnu'having four hands as a child was blessed by Lord Narayan in their previous life. After seeing that miracle ,Brahman was speechless and believed the reality of the stick that the couple told and he can't take the curse back , therefore, he blessed the family that they will be worshipped as flying god. Here, "Sudevi" is considered as "Goddess Bhatbhateni' who is considered as protector of child.
"Bhatbhateni Devi" is also considered as the daughter of goddess , "Tunaldevi" of Tunaldevi temple located at Hadigaaun. So, during jatra at Hadigaaun, Bhatbhateni Devi, her husband and son are taken once for visiting Tunaldevi.
